- 1). Choose the best brand of dry dog food you can afford. It's best not to go with the cheapest generic brand of dry dog food because the manufacturers often use a great deal of grain filler which is not very nutritious for dogs. Choose name brand dry dog food with meat products such as chicken, lamb or beef products named first on the list of ingredients on the back of the bag.
- 2). Transition to the dry food slowly, adding a small amount of dry to whatever your dog has been previously getting, then adding more of the dry food daily over a two-week period until dry food is all that is being fed. This allows your dog's digestive system to adapt to the new ingredients in the food and to the new dry consistency.
- 3). Follow the directions on the bag to determine the correct serving size of dry food for your dog's weight class.
- 4). Mix the dry food with water if your dog refuses to eat it. Add one part water to four parts dry food to make it more palatable.
- 5). Keep plenty of water on hand for your dog to drink. Because it has a dry consistency, your dog will need more water to absorb it into its system. Make sure you change the water in your dog's bowl several times a day to make sure it is fresh.
