Crate Training a Puppy

Crate training a puppy is a great choice especially if you want to keep your puppy out of trouble when you are away or at night.
Crate training also allows your puppy to have its own space in which it feels safe and secure.
When buying a crate for a puppy, make sure the crate is large enough for you puppy to move around freely.
Take also note that your puppy will grow, according to its breed, so make sure the crate is also large enough for when it grows to its full size unless you plan on buying another crate later.
At first your puppy will be curious about the crate, so place it in common area and let the puppy sniff and get used to the presence of the crate.
Then you could place all your puppies toys and blankets in the crate, making it a comfortable space to be in.
It also helps to place treats in the crate and praising your puppy when it is inside the crate.
It is important you give your puppy time to get used to the crate, do not rush it.
The key is to let your puppy know that the crate is a safe place to be in and not a prison.
To start, leave your puppy inside the crate for 15-30 minutes.
However do not come near the crate at all, even if your puppy starts barking.
After the time is up let your puppy out and give him a treat and appraisals.
Repeat this step, each time increasing the amount of time you leave your puppy in the crate.
Also, make sure the crate is in a common area so your puppy doesn't feel alone, do NOT place a crate in a laundry room or basement.
You know that your puppy is crate trained when it goes in the crate by its self to take naps and such.
Remember to keep plenty of fresh water and food in it.
